|Applying Fujifilm Film Simulations within Adobe Lightroom|
I posted an article recently for FujiLove on-line magazine about applying film profiles within the In Camera RAW Converter for the Fujifilm X-Pro 2. This is a great feature if you want to quickly shoot, process, transfer via wifi to your smart device and post to social media. I know many photographers who love this capability. However, if you have more time and want to really explore the film simulation profiles of the X-Pro 2 and other Fujifilm X series cameras, you can do so within Lightroom and Photoshop. Here's how:
|Shot on Fujifilm X-Pro 2 and XF 35mm f/2 WR. Imported into LR and ACROS Ye Filter applied|
The biggest question I get asked is: Where do you find the profiles in LR or PS? For LR it is found under CAMERA CALIBRATION tab while you are in Develop mode. The default setting is ADOBE STANDARD. If you click that window, all the film profiles appear and you can select any of the available profiles. I suggest making all your adjustments first and then select your film profile last, then you can proceed to either export the image or continue editing your virtual camera roll.
To apply film simulations with Photoshop, you must start by clicking on the RAW image file. The CAMERA RAW (current version 9.4) application automatically opens up if this is your default RAW converter application. Again, I suggest making all your basic and advanced adjustments first (white balance, tone curve, etc.) and then make your way to the Camera Calibration tab (the little camera icon). Again, the default camera profile is ADOBE STANDARD. Click it and all the film simulations will come up. Now you can see in real time and on a large monitor how each film simulation profile affects your soon-to-be-processed image. Within this Camera Calibration tab you can also tweak the film profile itself. Very cool.

This workflow seems very convenient, but are the results identical between in-camera and LR conversion?
Thanks for following my brand, I appreciate it. From my tests so far the film simulation profile is identical, although I have not done a back to back critical test. The reason for this is because I apply other adjustments in-camera that will be different in LR or PS. For instance when I add +1 sharpness and -1 shadows in camera, what is the equivalent in LR? You can't really compare since there's more than one way to sharpen or decrease shadow detail in LR or PS. However, the actual film simulation profile gives consistent results from my tests. For full control over your image, it is better to shoot RAW, although it is more time consuming in post. For a quick custom image, in-camera RAW conversion is a fast way to produce amazing images, and with wifi, you can share quickly. Thanks for your question.Delete
Thanks a lot Take! I have to confess i have not even started looking into the adjustments in-camera, one more thing to learn (on both my x100T and the brand new X-pro2 ^^)Delete
The X-Pro2 is the first of the X-Series with a NR=-4 setting which greatly reduces the waxy skin effect ("WSE") at ISO>1600. Do you foresee firmware updates to other X-Series cameras to also provide NR=-4 or even NR=OFF?
Fujifilm works very hard on their firmware updates and so we all hope that this NR issue can be addressed in the near future. I have no info at this time but will pass on your suggestion to Fujifilm Canada.Delete

Maybe you saw these films that were recorded - from birthday parties, weddings, child firsts or whatever. You, similar to your folks and grandparents, treasure those recollections for quite a long time in the wake of being recorded. Best film to digital convertersReplyDelete

At the point when you're not even in the game you can't win or lose. You sit on the innovative sidelines as an onlooker suspecting "woulda, coulda, shoulda" about your motion picture making energy. At the point when you rationally focus on going out on a limb the imaginative you'll feel a surge of authentic energy. That is living!ReplyDelete
